Been busy the past couple weeks. Some personal matters, some not. Sometimes life just gets in the way. So I’m doing another “catch all” post with music related stuff that if you follow this website, you may be interested in. None of which is worth putting up in separate posts, so it’s all going in this one.
Well one thing that does deserve its own post is the new Pat Todd & The Rankoutsiders album, “I’ll Dream Alone”. I got an advance and have been writing up a track by track review of it, which will be up in the next couple of weeks or so. The album looks like it’s now coming out on Oct 2nd (not Sept 18th), so look for it in a couple of weeks.
KISS (or the company that now owns KISS, lol) released “Destroys Anaheim ’76”, which was remixed from master multi-track tapes by Eddie Kramer. This is NOT the soundboard recording that has been in circulation forever. This is completely different and professionally done. It’s too early to say where this stands in the history of live KISS recordings, but it sounds incredible and it just might be my go to live KISS album whenever I want to hear some live KISS. Fantastic release! I hope there’s more surprises like this in the vaults to be released in the future! No one is getting any younger! Available in vinyl box sets with a book and also on a standalone CD for very reasonable prices.
I’ve been making some punk rock playlists on Spotify, covering ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, 2000s, and 2010s punk rock. I try to make sure they’re not dominated by one artist and not by songs we’ve all heard a million times before. They’re all a work in progress and are meant to be played on “shuffle” whenever you’re in the mood for each particular decade. Here’s my ’80s punk playlist. Been listening to the new Badzy release, “To The Bone”. A band that just came out of nowhere that’s just a hard hitting Elvis Costello meets The Jam meets Cheap Trick and a bunch of loud guitars. Like Kurt Baker meets The Prize. Actually, they didn’t really come out of “nowhere”. They’re from New Orleans, and I feel this album is going to be near the top of many “Top 10” lists of the year. This is one of those albums that are perfectly done: songwriting, the mix, the production, the energy. Here’s a random track from it:
On the action rock side of things, I haven’t really had the time to hear this full album yet, but I have been following the Norwegian band, the Backstreet Girls, for a number of years now. They got a new album out called “Full Tilt Boogie” that sounds really good to my ears. As the cover implies, they are no frills and not doing anything fancy here. Just full-on kick ass power rock ‘n roll. Here’s a song and the rest is also up on YouTube:
Damo Musclecar from the LongGoneLoser podcast (and the band Muscle Car) posted a video tour of Melbourne. I recognize almost every single place he takes you to on this video tour and what I don’t recognize, I’m going to have to hit next trip! Some good shots of AC/DC Lane and stories about it too. Last time I went there (last November), I saw them setting up the lighted sign for it. There’s even places he shows that I’ve been to a dozen times (mainly to drink), but didn’t know there was an AC/DC exhibit inside one of the adjoining areas! Next time!
