Rocket From The Crypt always reunites for a special Halloween show around this time every year. This one was extra special, as they’ve been doing a special tour for the release of the newly rediscovered recordings released as “Scream Frankenstein Scream”, which is only available on vinyl and only sold at the live shows (remaining copies will be sold online once the tour is done).
So the line for the merch on this day was unreal. Out the door. Inside, it wrapped around the House Of Blues floor a couple times. Thankfully, they were smart enough to have enough copies of “Scream Frankenstein Scream” for anyone who wanted one. And you have to have one, as it is one of the best recordings Rocket From The Crypt has ever done. I’ll probably have a review of it up soon.
Now I’ve been to many sold out shows at the House Of Blues in San Diego. The Damned. Motorhead. Slayer. And it was nothing like this. At least for those shows, I could get to the side or even in the front of the pit. I could at least SEE the band. Even for Rocket From The Crypt last year, I could get up to the side to take some pictures. This year? Forget about it. It had to have been at least twice capacity. Speedo even mentioned at the end how no one was dancing. Well to dance, you have to have ROOM! And there was no room. It was elbow to elbow. Thankfully this time, I was able to get a photo pass and take some real photos with my real camera, but to watch the show after my allotment of 3 songs in the photo pit, I basically had to sit on the stairs and watch it on the TV monitor.
As for Rocket From The Crypt themselves? They rocked. Hard. I thought they were going to dress up as Frankenstein Monsters to stick with the theme of the album that was released, but they had a pile of crap sculptures (literally) on each side of the stage and they dressed up as flies. They came out to a cover of “Human Fly” by the Cramps and then blasted into basically the whole of “Scream Dracula Scream” with a few other songs sprinkled in. Speedo had some amp issues, though, which resulted in some funny in-between song banter while things were getting re-arranged and/or fixed (I don’t know what was done, as I couldn’t see anything). They also stretched out some songs with some long jammy parts, which was interesting and not something I’m used to seeing them do. All in all, it was a great show.
Anyways, like I said before, I was able to take some real pictures, with a new camera lens, so here they are.
Special thanks to Thad and John for the photo pass!
