Show Review: The Killing Floors & The Loons at the Casbah 8/29/26

To be honest, I wasn’t going to really review anything or take pictures this night. Believe it or not, doing all this is a lot of work, so it was going to be just a fun night out. But The Killing Floors were just so freakin’ amazing, I had to whip out the camera and take some photos. And then the Loons played a fantastic fun set that was also amazing, so I was taking more photos. And since some of them came out really good, I may as well share them and my experiences this night.
The Killing Floors are a ’60s style garage rock band from Los Angeles who have a tinge of psychedelia to their music. They were celebrating the release of their self-titled debut album and just got back from a tour of Spain, where I’m sure they went down great. The Killing Floors all worked up a big sweat and totally and completely kicked ass! Great stage presence too. They normally play with an organist, but he was out this night. Either way, it would have been special if he was there because I hear he’s incredibly wild on the organ, flipping and flopping all about, but it was also special to hear them as a full on rockin’ garage band. Definitely not a band to miss when they come to town!
La Mesa’s resident ’60s psychedelia garage rock style band, The Loons, also completely killed it! Dare I say the best I’ve seen them. One of the those bands I’ve seen a million times, but they DO seem to keep getting better and better. Their drummer, Christopher Cancelliere, was ON FIRE tonight, channeling Gene Krupa, and each time he looked at me and made a face, I was so enraptured, I forgot to take a picture.

I also blew it another time in regards for a perfect photo. Let me get this straight: at my most conservative estimate, I’ve seen at least 3,000 live performances. Probably more like 4,000-5,000 performances, but let’s say it’s 3,000. Whatever the number, I have never seen a drummer, in the middle of a song, put one drumstick down, pounding beats with the other, grab a beer with that empty hand, chug it for 10 seconds, put it down, then pick up his drumstick and NOT MISS A BEAT! I was so stunned, again, I forgot to take a picture of it. He also broke his kick pedal before the last song. Show must go on, and rather wait for one of the other bands to provide a kick pedal, they just went full on into the next song. He played standing up while sometimes leaning down to tap on the bass drum. An incredibly fun night.
