I don’t know what it is about Melbourne, but they have a fantastic rock scene right now. Well I shouldn’t say “right now”, as they’ve always had a fantastic rock scene. Is it the water? Most likely it’s the Guinness at the Drunken Poet (which happen to be the best pints of Guinness I’ve ever had anywhere). So whenever I hear about a new band from Melbourne, I pay some extra attention to it. And today’s band is called The States. I don’t know anything about them other than they formed a couple years ago. And if this release is any indication, they got a great future ahead of them!
Buzzsaw guitars combined with good time ‘ol fashioned bratty punk rock ‘n roll, with female fronted vocals. Imagine Joan Jett fronting the New York Dolls. The songs are very well crafted, catchy, and memorable. Seven songs and I wish there were more. A lot more. They must be a blast live. Wish I could’ve seen them when I visited Melbourne last November. Next time!
