Show Review: The Zeros 77 at Girl Can’t Help It anniversary party June 1, 2024

Epic anniversary celebration outside of The Girl Can’t Help It vintage clothing store in North Park area of San Diego on June 1st, 2024. I’m guessing it’s their 12th anniversary because they state that they’re heading into their 13th year. But they always have some great shows outside to celebrate and this was no exception.

First of all Swami John Reis was DJing. He brought homemade cupcakes for everyone too!

Secondly, a very rare appearance by Covid Cola. You can read about that here.

Thirdly, the Zeros 77 played! There’s a little schism in the Zeros world. Javier and Baba doing “The Zeros” and Hector and Robert doing “Zeros 77”. While I’m told that Zeros 77 is just a side thing with only a couple shows planned, they did spend money on a big banner, so there’s that. But even though there’s a little split in the Zeros world, both Baba and Victor from Javier’s The Zeros were there to cheer Hector and Robert on.

They played an abbreviated set before their show at the Casbah later in the night (review coming soon). Lety from the Schizophonics on drums, who was great as usual, and Robert’s nephew Adam doing a fine job on 2nd guitar. They were all just fantastic. Camera crews there to document it all for a documentary on the Zeros.

I guess at Punk Rock Bowling last week, Swami John Reis was talking to Robert and said something about wanting to sing “Wimp” with them sometime. Well today, Robert called him out on it and had John sing it! John was put on the spot and a little unprepared, so Robert had Jasja from the Girl Can’t Help It run out to his “backstage” area in the store to grab the lyrics, which he did. But first! Today was also Robert’s birthday! So John put HIM on the spot while everyone sang “Happy Birthday”. And then totally KILLED IT singing “Wimp”.
Happy anniversary to Gale Sparkle Higgens (whom I should probably interview sometime, as she must have some stories about managing Johnny Thunders) and Jasja and here’s to more continued success! On the way back to the car, a violent but jovial old punk rocker told my wife he liked her style.
