Show Review: The Junkys Play Tribute To Velvet Underground Oct 22, 2024

So there was a special little show set up by Nico Bones at “Good Times At Davey Waynes” up in Hollywood on October 22, 2024. I actually had to be in town for something (you will definitely hear about this in the future!), and there was no way I was going to miss this. I have no problem with tribute bands, cover bands, or bands doing covers of songs. If I like the music, I want to hear it live, loud, and raw. On this night all was delivered when Nico Bones did a tribute to Slade, and The Junkys did a tribute to the Velvet Underground.

I recognize Lou Reed as being a pioneer and a great songwriter, but I swear that every single version I’ve heard of a Velvet Underground song covered by another artist has always been better than the original. And I have yet to be proven wrong. The Junkys were no exception. Ok, some songs were better than others and other bands may have done a song or two better than the Junkys’ version (UK Subs version of “White Light White Heat” for one), but they were solid tonight. Guitars were nice and loud. The sound was raw. And the versions were superior. Time flies when you’re having fun and their 40 minute set seemed like it was over in 10 minutes, which goes to show how great it was.

Here’s a short clip of “Waiting For The Man” so you can see how great they sounded:

And here’s some pictures:
