One of the things I look forward to the most every December season is El Vez’s special Christmas (and other holidays) show at the Casbah. It’s always different, and always FUN! This year, like last year, he had the rockabilly band the Centuries backing him up. Unlike last year, this was an afternoon show (!) on a Sunday and completely sold out. The Centuries are pretty solid and also a lot of fun and game for any of Mr Vez’s antics. I wouldn’t mind seeing them on their own sometime.
El Vez, the Mexican Elvis, plays punk rock covers of traditional songs, but also some originals. All with a Christmas, or holiday, slant for these shows. So you may get “Sleigh Ride” or “Christmas Time Is Here”, but you’ll get them with the characteristic El Vez humor and execution. You will always get “Feliz Navidad” with a mashup of “Public Image”, as this is one of his signature covers. This year they must’ve been in a T-Rex mood, as they did “Bang A Gong” and “20th Century Boy”. Also played this year were “Run Run Rudolph”, “Little Drummer Boy”, “White Christmas” (“Brown Christmas”), “California Sun” and a dozen other songs. Anways, it’s lots of fun and always recommended.
