Show Review: Creepxotica at Bali Hai Aug 1st, 2024

Legendary Bali Hai Restaurant on Shelter “Island” in San Diego had another release party. This time for their Creepxotica mini-mug or shot glass release. And expectedly, the mysterious Creepxotica played the event. They seem to play all the Bali Hai events and that’s a good thing. This is to be expected, as Dave Warshaw, one of their guitarists, does designs for the Bali Hai Restaurant menu and now their new clothing line. You can check out and buy the merch here.

If you haven’t heard Creepxotica, they’re a side project of the Creepy Creeps and play more instrumental loungy exotic music. They’re also not afraid to try new things. In the past they’ve gone portable, playing to people in the restaurant at different tables, played in elevators at Tiki Oasis, and even have had Rachel Deshon, a multi octave singer from Seattle, on a 10″ EP. Their latest venture into the unknown is a new album called “The Legend Of Chico Baker” which is along the same lines as their exotic lounge music. The same groove is there, but with a concept and maybe even a prog-rock twist, making it even more groovy in a weird sort of way.

Live, they’re a lot of fun. And for these big shows they bring out their dancers. For some reason tonight, the lighting for the band and dancers was especially good. I don’t know if it was a new position of the light on the dancing boxes or what they were wearing (or both), but the light was hitting them in a really cool way, almost making them look like the lights were dancing along with them. No, I wasn’t on any drugs. I tried taking pictures of this effect, but couldn’t really capture it. I probably looked like a perv too, but such are the things I do to make this blog interesting for you.

There’s also a lot of hilarious banter from the bassist, who probably could be a comedian. I’ve been trying to compile all his in between song banter clips together in one place for one big funny “comedy album”, but every time he sees me filming he does his best to make me look like a buffoon. The things I go through to try to make this blog interesting for you.

Enjoy! And “like” and “share” and “subscribe”.
