Show Review: Poison Hearts AC at the Casbah, June 1, 2024

Poison Hearts AC played the Casbah on June 1, opening for Zeros 77. They had the audience’s attention and a good crowd. We’ve seen them before recently (I even bought a CD and 7″), but I can’t remember with whom. They were good. Hard to classify. I was talking with a friend and she asked me how would I classify them? Ska, rockabilly, metal, crossed with No Doubt? Their bandcamp page says “Rancid meets The B-52’s” or “The Clash starring in Rocky Horror Picture Show”. I guess that’s as good as a description as any! Good songs, fun band. On the way back to the car, a violent but jovial old punk rocker told my wife he liked her style.

Hey Ted, It was nice meeting you the other night at Tower Bar. Thanks for the write-up. Just so you know, we have a difficult time classifying our sound too. Our individual tastes are so diverse that I’m not even sure we know what we want to be. I usually just say we play, “Rock N Roll” but honestly that could mean just about anything. Rock, Punk, Big Band, Jazz, Pop. At the end of the day I don’t think it needs to be classified. I actually get a kick out of hearing how other people describe us – that Rocky Horror quote seems to work, but not anything like what I set out to emulate. In any case, I wanted to follow up with you regarding those old comps you were telling me about. I’m always on the lookout for music that is new to me. Take care. -TG

Nice meeting you too! Those comps were a series called “Savage Kick”. Something like 11 volumes (at least). Another label called “Still Records” put out a series of CDs too. At least another 11 volumes. Some of them have very questionable titles for the times we’re living in, but it’s the incredible music on them that counts. Do a google for “savage kick blogspot” or “still records blogspot” and you can probably find a few. Also on discogs. If you can’t find any, let me know and I’ll hook you up.

here’s a random sample from one of the Still records comps:
