I was talking with Mick from the Tower Bar about a month ago. He’s from Australia and we started talking about our favorite Australian bands. As you can probably guess, it was a very long conversation. He mentioned that Civic played San Diego not too long ago. I got really bummed that I missed them.
So when I saw that Civic was playing Punk Rock Bowling in Las Vegas, I was thinking I better look to see if they’re playing any shows in San Diego again. And they were! Of course I wasn’t going to miss this show (even though the Dickies and Screeching Weasel were also playing this night).
Civic’s new album, “Chrome Dipped”, is a little bit of a change from their brand of bouncy Aussie flat out punk rock. It’s getting some mixed reviews from some long time fans, as it is quite a bit different, but some of the best albums take some time to grow on you. More late ’80s post punk than their previous albums. I haven’t really heard it yet, but if you want to read a review from someone I completely trust, check out Lord Rutledge’s review on his Faster and Louder blog.
Live, they were great! Most of the set was from “Chrome Dipped”, but I didn’t mind. The set was intense with some great guitarwork and great energy.
