Show Review: Covid Cola and Funky But Chic at the Casbah Dec 27, 2025

Decembers are always a fun and interesting time at the Casbah. Saturday, Dec 27th, “one-off” side projects Covid Cola and Funky But Chic played. All related to the Schizophonics and Robert Lopez from the Zeros. I say “one-off”, but this both these bands have played before at different places and different times. Owner and booker Tim Mays just wanted to get them at the Casbah for this special event.

Covid Cola have been written about here before.  They formed during the lockdown by Robert Lopez (a.k.a. El Vez) of the Zeros with friends Pat & Lety from the Schizophonics, to solely keep up their songwriting chops during the lockdown. And what chops they have! Lety steps away from her usual drumming and plays bass. And very well too!

Full on punk rock. Some wailing guitar solos and a lot of fun. They were never meant to record anything, but damn, some of these songs are so good, they should be put on an album.
Here’s the video I shot. Pictures below it.

Funky But Chic was another side project from Pat & Lety from the Schizophonics and Robert Lopez. And literally an all star band, stepping out of their comfort zone to do funk and disco covers.

Other members included the Mittens, Rikki Styxx from the Darts and Two Tens, and a giant robot! Oh and two drummers? Who was that guy wearing a wig drumming next to Lety? I will tell you! It was none other than Dale Crover from the Melvins/Redd Kross! Oh and he also played in Nirvana too. I was invited to his apartment in San Francisco back around ’95. He had his platinum award for playing on Nirvana’s “Bleach” album in his bathroom. He turned me onto Heavy Metal Parking Lot, which was only available on bootleg VHS back then. Anyways, back to the show… it was a fun night with lots of chaos. The music was not really my type of thing, but it sure was fun to watch.
